a poem about not being able to give all of your heart to someone, despite wanting them to have it. wishing it was them but knowing its not.
feeling safe isn’t the same as feeling seen.
i gave you my heart
beating and raw
thumping and thudding in your hands
you had it from the start
a final respite after being so sore
so battered from those who came before
it was easy
like you were my lungs
blindly knowing i could trust you to keep it safe
knowing you would breathe enough for the both of us
yet my heart remained closed
my core untouched
my voice quiet
i could not give you my soul
not whole but in pieces
fragments too many for you to put together
even though i wanted you as my forever.
